Jim Strain, club president, gives a weekly report of happenings at the railroad.
If you like hot steamy days then Glencoe was the place to be on Sunday.
The temp was 101 degrees by mid-afternoon. The passenger count was 234
and while patronage was steady earlier, after 3pm we only had 3 passengers.
Thanks to all who braved the heat to volunteer for the day. We had plenty
of help which allowed crews to rotate out and rest. Power for the day
was 928, 535 & 5205.
The big news Sunday was 928 made 4 successful solo passenger runs, thanks
to Steve Haack & Dale Bitsch for the work accomplished over the last
two weeks getting 928 ready for Sunday. Dale cleaned up 300's tender (being temporarily used for 928) and sealed up the water tank which was badly
rusted. Of course the project would never have gotten this far without all the work that was accomplished by John
Errante & Steve Haack. They really deserve all the credit for a job well done. The 928 is very sure footed and can pull a nine car train with
ease. To me it runs & fires similiar to 534 only it can pull more. It's a very welcome addition to the fleet.
Several photos are attached of 928's trips on Sunday, also included is 13 with Jimmy Scott & 5205 with Jim Scott heading west at yard limits
with the yard limit signal showing a yellow for station track two (red, yellow, red).
When you are working as train crew please be aware that all 6 signals are in operation. Besides the EB & WB yard limits, there are the EB
signals on passenger tracks 1 & 2 and the dwarfs at each end of the
service track. All six signals are block indicatiors - if you get a red
signal then you are required to stop, if the signal doesn't clear as expected call the TM and let him resolve the issue but do not
pass a red signal without permission from the TM.
Don't forget Sunday is the lunch for Joe Geders and we've been in contact
with John Errante who doing well & is working on his recovery from
surgery and he hopes to make it to Glencoe soon.
