Flood of 2008 |
Photos attached are from early Monday, March 24th before any cleanup and of the damage to the ROW. I also included some photos of the track extension but other than the tree on the track there was no damage there. ROW damage was limited to debris and ballast washout between Meramec Jct. and east Bluffs. The trail received considerable damage and I talked to Richard Love with DNR he said they will have to resurface the entire trail. Water reached about a foot short of the top of the carbarn garage door. This was lower than the 1982 flood but still very high. Water was also 2 feet deep in the machine shop but it did NOT reach the 2nd floor of the GFK.
Bob Tabernacki, Rich Owings, John Bell, & Jim Strain got the roundhouse cleaned up & power washed, Devin Lawson likewise in the Machine Shop while Bob Rands, Jim Scott and Jimmy Scott began the task of cleaning out the carbarn. Paul Smith, Clayton Cullen and Hank Welch were also out working on various cleanup projects.

Wednesday, March 26th Mary Shapiro, Editor, Press Journal and Chesterfield Journal, came out today and spoke with various members about the flood. She will include pictures she took in an article to appear soon.
Car Barn Crew: Jim Scott, Jim Greathouse, Jim Keeton, Jim Foster, Bob Percival, Bob Rands, Mike Brennan, Bob Tabernacki used # 13 to move all the passenger cars that were left under 6 feet of flood water over to the service track to be power washed. Many have asked why the cars were not moved to higher ground such as at Summit as we had in past floods. It was expected this flood would be higher than the tracks at Summit and would the cars would be under water anyway. Time was also an issue and it was decided they cars needed to be power washed before the season opened anyway. Crew power washed flat cars, seats, and trucks. Several gondolas were lifted onto saw horses using the A-Frame and had their trucks the inside of the cars power washed. Bob Tabernacki power washed the car barn, tracks 4-5-6-7-8, while the cars were out. Jim Scott will need help Wednesday, April 2 nd to complete power washing rest of the passenger cars. Then all the axels will need to be greased before opening day. Building &Grounds Crew: Mike Lorance, Dave Nuebauer, Paul Smith, and Hank Welch Cleaned out the basement of the GFK building. Hank borrowed John Rush's Bobcat to put refuse in dumpster provided by Wildwood for Glencoe residents.
